    13 AAC 04.223(b)(4) lets limousines and passenger buses used to transport persons for hire, motor homes, and 'vehicles identified by the vehicle manufacturer as multipurpose' comply with FMVSS 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205 (1992)) instead of the fixed percentages. FMVSS 205 sets no VLT floor for windows that are not requisite for driving visibility, so an SUV/van the manufacturer classifies as a multipurpose passenger vehicle can go any darkness behind the driver - which is why suv_van back/rear are null. Both secondary charts checked disagree and list 40% for SUVs and vans, so treat the null as the statutory reading rather than settled enforcement practice. Dual mirrors matter only in the grandfather clause: rear-window tint installed before July 1, 1994 is exempt if the owner has proof of the install date and the vehicle has driver-side and passenger-side rearview mirrors (13 AAC 04.223(h)).     Alaska tint questions

    What is the darkest legal tint in Alaska?

    For a sedan in Alaska, front side windows must let at least 70% of light through, back side windows at least 40%, and the rear window at least 40%. Lower VLT means darker glass, so those percentages are floors, not targets, and the meter reads the film and the factory glass together. SUVs, vans and trucks are listed separately: front side 70%, back side no VLT limit, rear no VLT limit.

    Is 20% tint legal in Alaska?

    No, not on the front side windows. Alaska requires at least 70% VLT there and 20% is darker than that, before you even account for the factory glass, which makes the reading darker still. The back side windows have a 40% floor, so 20% is too dark there too.

    Can I tint the windshield in Alaska?
