Medical exemption

Penalties
Driving with illegal tint and installing illegal tint are each misdemeanors. As quoted in a 2023 legislative bill text (that itself proposed enhancing these amounts): 1st offense up to $200 fine or up to 20 days jail; 2nd offense within 1 year, $200–$400 fine or up to 40 days; 3rd+ offense within 1 year of the 2nd, $400–$1,000 fine or up to 9 months, or both. Forging/misusing compliance labels or medical-exemption certificates is punishable by up to $1,000 fine and/or up to 3 months in jail.

Mississippi does not host a free, consolidated official code website, so the statutory text used here was read verbatim as quoted in Mississippi Senate Bill 2238 (2023 Regular Session), on the official Mississippi Legislature bill-tracking site (billstatus.ls.state.ms.us). That bill only proposed enhancing the penalty schedule and did NOT touch the 28% VLT threshold, which multiple independent secondary sources (checked only to corroborate, not as the source of the number) confirm is still in force as of 2025–2026. IMPORTANT CAVEAT: SB2238 itself 'Died In Committee' on 01/31/2023 per the Legislature's own bill history record, so it is uncertain whether the specific tiered $200/$400/$1,000 penalty figures shown in that bill text reflect the amount actually in force today versus an earlier, un-amended penalty figure — I could not locate a live official portal to confirm the currently operative fine amounts with certainty. Vehicles fully exempt from the tint-darkness restriction: school buses, public-transit buses, nonprofit-owned buses/vans, funeral-service vehicles, limousines, and government law-enforcement/fire vehicles. For pickups, vans, motor homes, RVs, SUVs, and other 'multipurpose vehicles,' any window behind the front two side windows (i.e., back side windows and the rear window) may be tinted to whatever darkness federal law would allow as factory tint for that window/vehicle — effectively any darkness.

What is the darkest legal tint in Mississippi?
For a sedan in Mississippi, front side windows must let at least 28% of light through, back side windows at least 28%, and the rear window at least 28%. Lower VLT means darker glass, so those percentages are floors, not targets, and the meter reads the film and the factory glass together. SUVs, vans and trucks are listed separately: front side 28%, back side no stated number, rear no stated number.
Is 20% tint legal in Mississippi?
No, not on the front side windows. Mississippi requires at least 28% VLT there and 20% is darker than that, before you even account for the factory glass, which makes the reading darker still. The back side windows have a 28% floor, so 20% is too dark there too.
